Brewers reliever Will Smith's suspension for a foreign substance was reduced Friday from eight games to six. Smith, who made his appeal to Major League Baseball officials on Monday, was ejected from a game on May 21 for having a mixture of rosin and sunscreen on his arm.
His suspension begins with Friday's game against Minnesota. Barring postponements, he will be eligible to return on Thursday. Smith has appeared in 25 games for the Brewers this season, posting a 1.83 ERA.
"My agent did all his homework," Smith said after Monday's hearing. "He said since 2014 I've thrown in 102 games, which is second in the [National League] and third-most in baseball, so an eight-game suspension is terrifying for someone who throws that much.
