Smith gets 8 games for substance on arm, decides to appeal

Brewers left-handed reliever Will Smith received an eight-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Friday for having a foreign substance on his arm in Thursday's 10-1 loss to the Braves, but will file an appeal.

Smith will be eligible to pitch until the appeal process is complete.

Smith was caught with what he said was a mixture of rosin and sunscreen on his right arm after he took the mound in the bottom of the seventh on Thursday. Smith said he applied the substance on his arm while warming up in the bullpen to get a better grip on the ball and forgot to wipe it off before entering the game.
