Reliever Blaine Boyer finding niche with Brewers

When it was suggested to Blaine Boyer that he has become very good at carving up hitters with precision pitching, the veteran right-hander reacted with mock outrage.

"Hey, I can still get it up there at 95 (mph) if I have to," he exclaimed.

Which is true. The Milwaukee Brewers reliever has an average fastball velocity a tick below 92 mph this season. But Boyer does not make his living trying to blow hitters away.

"The key is (inducing) weak contact," said Boyer, 34, one of the older players on the rebuilding Brewers roster.

"I'll take a first-pitch groundout instead of a strikeout any day, especially at this point of my career.
