CHICAGO -- The Red Sox claimed infielder Luis Jimenez off waivers on Sunday, a day after the Brewers had designated him for assignment and activated center fielder Carlos Gomez from the disabled list.
The Brewers knew Jimenez as a terrific defender at third base and were intrigued by his bat when they claimed him off waivers from the Angels last fall. He had some success at the plate late in Spring Training, but struggled in the regular season off the Brewers' bench, going 1-for-15.
Because the Brewers struggled to a 5-18 start with Jimenez on the roster, manager Ron Roenicke was mostly unable to use him as a late-inning defensive replacement, as planned.
