Jonathan Villar was coming off an incredible, breakout 2016 season that saw him lead the league in stolen bases while also hitting .285 and knocking 19 homers. The Brewers offered him a contract extension worth at least $20 million. Thankfully, Villar declined and decided to bet on himself. That worked out poorly for Villar, but it saved the Crew from what would be a pesky contract for the next few years. After Villar’s disastrous season, the MIlwaukee Brewers are on the lookout for upgrades at second base. The lack of a guaranteed contract for Villar allows the team to plan for the future without having to deal with Villar’s contract situation.
