Junior Guerra's career saved by the split-finger

Junior Guerra smiled as he pondered the question: Where would he be if he hadn't stumbled upon and eventually mastered the split-fingered fastball?

"To tell you the truth, I have no idea where I'd be without it," the Brewers' starting pitcher said through translator Carlos Brizuela a couple of days before the all-star break. "I just thank God I was able to find it."

Without the splitter, a pitch that has largely fallen out of favor because of the stress it puts on a pitcher's arm, it's unlikely Guerra would have a locker in the Brewers' clubhouse.
