Way back in 1948, Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck was credited with being the first baseball person to say, "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make."
For the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets, the best trade this season was one verbally agreed upon but nixed by the Mets before it became official.
On July 29, the Brewers had an agreement to send centerfielder Carlos Gomez to New York for pitcher Zack Wheeler and infielder Wilmer Flores. Wheeler is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't be back until later next season but is considered one of the Mets' better pitching prospects.
