Justin Verlander has had one of the best careers of any pitcher ever, and he’s still a very good pitcher. But Verlander is 41 years old. If there’s something that he probably does not want to do, it’s to have to throw more than 40 pitches in an inning on a hot night in Houston, an inning in which pesky Milwaukee hitters just keep fouling off pitches and not swinging at balls. The peskiest hitter of all, William Contreras, would work Verlander for 13 increasingly desperate pitches, until he put a baseball deep into the night, providing all the offense that an effective Brewers pitching staff would need.
