Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of the official beginning of the Brewers' large-scale rebuilding process.
On July 23, 2015, the Brewers sent third baseman Aramis Ramirez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios. Thus began the systematic jettisoning of veterans in favor of minor-league prospects as principal owner Mark Attanasio and then-general manager Doug Melvin committed to turning over the roster after a disastrous first half that cost manager Ron Roenicke his job one month in.
One by one, other established players followed Ramirez out the door. A week later, after a trade with the New York Mets fell through at the last minute, the Brewers accelerated the process by sending centerfielder Carlos Gomez and right-hander Mike Fiers to Houston for four minor-leaguers — outfielders Domingo Santana and Brett Phillips, left-hander Josh Hader and right-hander Adrian Houser.
