Stewart Downing was shown videos of errors after asking why he is not in the Boro team

Stewart Downing was made to sit and watch replays of his own mistakes when he knocked on Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka's door to ask why he has not been playing.

The former England winger started ten of the newly promoted side's first 11 league games this season, but has been on the bench in each of the last four, including not playing a minute of their 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Sunday.

Karanka said the 32-year-old came to ask why he has been dropped this week, and was answered by being shown detailed video analysis of his individual errors and of why the manager cannot fit him into Boro's new 4-3-3 system.
