Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing tips Ben Gibson for England call

Stewart Downing has tipped Middlesbrough teammate Ben Gibson to earn an England call after Gareth Southgate's scouting mission on Teesside.

Southgate, a former Boro captain and manager and now interim boss of the national side, was in attendance for the club's impressive 2-0 win over Bournemouth.

With 14 Englishmen among the 22 starters it was an obvious destination, with on-loan Cherries midfielder Jack Wilshere the highest profile name.

But England are less well stocked at the heart of defence than they are in midfield.

Burnley's Michael Keane was drafted in as injury cover ahead of the games against Malta and Slovenia but Southgate knows all about Gibson too, having coached him at under-21 level.
