The Championship fixture between Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday turned out to be the final straw for both managers.
Boro boss Garry Monk and Wednesday counterpart Carlos Carvalhal were dismissed afterwards and now both clubs have Tony Pulis on their radar.
Middlesbrough owner Steve Gibson moved immediately for Pulis, recently sacked by West Brom, and hopes to rubberstamp the appointment within the next 72 hours.
However, the issue has become complicated with the departure of Carvalhal, who led Wednesday to the play-offs for the last two years.
