Southampton piled more misery on newly-relegated Middlesbrough after securing a 2-1 victory at the Riverside on Saturday thanks to goals from Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond.
The two Saints forwards netted either side of half-time to put Claude Puel's side in command before Shane Long missed the chance to add a third with 26 minutes remaining. The Ireland international was brought down by Brad Guzan in the penalty box but fired the resulting penalty over the bar.
After Long failed to put the game to bed, Patrick Bamford netted his first goal of the season to bring his side back into the game but it proved no more than a consolation.
