Lens offer £8m for Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom as French club seek to beat Sheffield United in battle to sign the Championship's top scorer last season

French club Lens have made an £8million offer for Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom.

Akpom top scored with 28 Championship goals in 40 games to be named the division's player of the season.

The 27 year-old's form during the best season of his career has also attracted admirers at home and abroad.

And the situation is a dilemma for Boro with Akpom in the final year of his contract and a potential free agent next summer who can sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas side in January.

Lens are in the market for a new striker after the departure of their 21-goal leading scored Lois Openda who left to join RB Leipzig for around £39m.
