Former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka turned down a route back into management from Alaves.
The Spanish club sacked head coach Luis Zubeldia at the weekend after just three months in charge.
Alaves sit rock bottom of the table having lost four out of their first four games, conceding seven and scoring none.
So they made the decision to get rid of the Argentine and try a fresh approach for what looks likely to become a long season battling against relegation.
And, according to Cadena SER, Alaves approached Karanka about taking charge at the Mendizorrotza Stadium.
