MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A four-run sixth inning proved to be too much to overcome on Thursday night, as Middle Tennessee baseball lost its opening game to Southern Miss 9-4 at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Blue Raiders (29-22, 17-11 C-USA) were able to take a 4-3 lead after five innings, but a three-hit top of the sixth propelled the Golden Eagles (39-14, 21-7 C-USA) to a 7-4 lead that they never relinquished.
"With nine walks, a couple of hit by pitches, a couple wild pitches, a couple of passed balls and the four errors, you don't win many games," head coach Jim Toman said.
