The Michigan Wolverines treated tonight's game against Rutgers essentially as a glorified scrimmage, doing everything they wanted on their way to a 78-0 blowout win. It was the biggest win in program history since the 1930's, and it certainly sets a tone for the rest of the season. Here are three things we learned from the game:
3) Defense!!
Michigan's statistical dominance in this game was outstanding. Rutgers finished with 39 total yards (compared to Michigan's 600), went 0/17 on third down, and only got two first downs the whole game - both of which came on their last two drives. When you can hold a team to less than a yard per play, that's incredibly impressive.
2) Harbaugh wanted to send a statement to Ohio State
Last week, Rutgers faced Ohio State, and the Buckeyes won 58-0. You don't think Jim Harbaugh had that number on his mind when he was doing everything he could to put up as many points on the board as possible? Sure, some of it was Rutgers being atrocious on defense, but Michigan came in with a VERY aggressive gameplan.
1) Jabrill Peppers is a legitimate Heisman candidate
We all know about Peppers' natural ability and the stuff he can do on the defensive side of the ball, but Harbaugh got him the ball in a variety of ways on offense - at quarterback and at running back. Just look at his highlight reel:

When you're a safety/cornerback/linebacker doing THAT to opposing teams, Heisman voters will take notice.
