On Monday, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey opened his conference’s football media days doing his best to sum up all that has taken place in college athletics over the past year.
And it has been a lot.
There was the beginning of the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) era, which began in July 2021. There was the big news that Texas and Oklahoma were leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. There was the burgeoning transfer portal and the discussion of expanding the College Football Playoff, which ultimately didn’t come to fruition.
By the time it was announced last month that Southern Cal and UCLA would be leaving the Pac-12 and joining the Big Ten, it was just the latest — if not the most significant —move that indicated the old days of college athletics were disappearing.
