Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown is a good example of what makes Jim Harbaugh such an astute football coach. Harbaugh didn’t know Brown when he interviewed him last winter. They weren’t friends. They weren’t even former adversaries on the field.
Harbaugh simply researched who had built the best defenses in college football last season, discovered what Brown did at Boston College and called him.
For a profession that so often relies on word of mouth, here was a hiring search done by the book. Still, it was the interview that convinced Harbaugh Brown belonged in Ann Arbor.
