Wilton Speight recalls the time he nearly left Michigan's football program

ANN ARBOR -- Wilton Speight's bags weren't packed just yet.

Once a touted high school prospect, Speight had all but lost his sense of place at Michigan during the opening days of Jim Harbaugh's first fall camp in 2015.

He'd seen himself being cussed out by Harbaugh on an HBO special the previous spring. He had seen the writing on the wall. Jake Rudock was going to be Michigan's starting quarterback. Speight was barely on the depth chart.

The coaching staff said it was a competition, but Speight thought differently. He'd been in contact with his father and his personal quarterback coach -- Steve Clarkson -- who had both already reached out to other schools on his behalf.
