As the story goes, back in the mid-1960s, Frank McGuire brought his South Carolina team to the University of Pennsylvania for a game. Walking into the most cramped 9,000-seat gym in America, the Gamecock players complained about the facilities. The Palestra, opened some three decades earlier, offered a court, two baskets and little else. For most of its history, the building has smelled like mustard.
McGuire, disgusted with his players' grumbling, called them forward. He rattled off a few names: Wilt. Oscar. West.
"If this locker room was good enough for them, it's good enough for you, gentlemen," McGuire said, allegedly.
