UM defensive chief stressing versatility

Ann Arbor — There’s nothing phony about D.J. Durkin.

He loves football, and he wants to pass that passion on to his players.

It’s no act, either.

“Oh, man, coach Durkin brings a lot of energy to the locker room,” defensive lineman Willie Henry said of the first-year Michigan defensive coordinator. “He brings that energy and excitement and gets things going.”

Durkin is intense, and if the Michigan defense takes on the image of their new coordinator, that just might end up being a good thing.

“I don’t think there’s anything you particularly do to implement (intensity),” said Durkin, Florida’s defensive coordinator for the last two years.
