Spike Albrecht ending career after hip surgeries

Ann Arbor — Spike Albrecht, who burst onto the national college basketball scene with an NCAA Tournament to remember as a freshman, announced Friday morning that his career is over.

After having two hip surgeries, in April and May, the senior guard's recovery proved too much to overcome.

A two-time captain of the Wolverines, he met with coach John Beilein in his Crisler Center office around noon Thursday and a decision was made.

"This has been the toughest decision I have ever had to make," Albrecht said in a statement. "After taking a hard look at what is best for me, and this team, I will be stepping away from the game that has meant so much to me.
