Michigan backup quarterback Alex Orji has been way more of a runner than a thrower to this point in his collegiate career. Orji, now a junior, has rushed 28 times for 153 yards and three scores. However, Orji’s attempted just three passes in his career — 2-for-3 for eight yards with one passing touchdown.
With the number of runs Orji receives greatly outweighing passing attempts, defenses have no reason to respect what he can do as a passer and can heavily stack the box, limiting what he can do rushing. Just as Michigan wants to be a balanced offense, the game plan should be balanced for Orji as well when he sees the field.
