ANN ARBOR -- If you're taking Kirby Hocutt's words at face value, one thing seems clear.
This year, the College Football Playoff committee has no problem taking conference championship games, lighting them on fire and throwing them off a cliff.
Hocutt, the CFP selection committee chairman, spoke for about 30 minutes Tuesday night about a variety of topics. But every one of those conversation avenues always ended up at the same destination.
When it comes to this year's College Football Playoff, precedent means nothing. Complete resumes mean everything.
"Our charge is to rank the best four teams in college football," Hocutt said in his final comments of the night.
