ROSEMONT, Ill. - The NCAA's Division I manual is 415 pages long.
Amid the governing organization's constitutional articles and operating bylaws outlining the dos and don'ts, the first mention of "nonpermissible" on page 75 doesn't address universities, coaches or administrators. It targets student-athletes and declares them ineligible to participate if they make money off their own name.
The inability of college athletes to profit from their own name, image and likeness is a key part of the NCAA's amateurism model, which it defines as a "bedrock principle." It also continues to be a hotly-debated topic for change.
