Michigan's Jalen Mayfield says he could've competed for a starting job last season.
But he didn't think it was in his best interest.
The redshirt freshman tackle spoke with offensive line coach Ed Warinner last year and the two decided it would be best for Mayfield to redshirt — to avoid "being thrown directly in the fire right away."
