ANN ARBOR -- Michigan defenders blamed "self-inflicted wounds" and vowed a quick fix on Monday after the group stumbled out of the gate in the season opener against Notre Dame.
The unit ranked third nationally in 2017, yet allowed back-to-back touchdowns to the Fighting Irish on their first two possessions of the game.
Not only did it spot Notre Dame a quick 14 points, but it proved to be too large a margin to climb out of en route to a 24-17 loss on Saturday.
"The only thing that I can say is we hurt ourselves," defensive end Rashan Gary told reporters.
