Charles Matthews tried to return from injury before Michigan basketball's loss at Michigan State on Saturday night.
Matthews, who injured his right ankle in a 77-70 loss to the Spartans on Feb. 24, was in uniform for the first time since his injury. He wore what appeared to be a protective brace on his right ankle, and stretched and went through warm-ups with the rest of his teammates.
But Matthews wasn't in the starting lineup. And he sat on the bench for the entirety of the 75-63 loss, missing his third consecutive game .
“I was hoping he’d be back tonight," said Michigan coach John Beilein after the game.
