Michigan's Brad Hawkins thinks he's found his groove at safety

ANN ARBOR -- The path has been a complicated and winding one for Brad Hawkins, but things are finally coming together.

Michigan's sophomore safety is seeing the field more than he did his freshman year in 2017, when he appeared in 12 games but spent most of the time on special teams.

This year, Hawkins, of New Jersey, has stepped into the reserve safety role. He's earned playing time in each of Michigan's first five games, totaling 12 tackles, including 2 1/2 for a loss, and a pass deflection.

"Things are obviously a lot faster on the field (for me), especially in-game," Hawkins told reporters this week.
