Michigan survives thriller at Northwestern to stay unbeaten

EVANSTON, Ill. -- It took nine games, but the result of a Michigan basketball game was in doubt in the final minute. The Wolverines, who entered Tuesday's game at Northwestern outscoring opponents by an average of 21 points, needed a buzzer-beating 3 to clank off the rim in order to escape Welsh-Ryan Arena with a 62-60 victory.

It was Michigan's first win at Northwestern since 2013. Michigan improved to 9-0 and 2-0 in the Big Ten and will resume nonconference play for the remainder of December.

Michigan has leaned on its defense for the better part of two seasons, and the Wolverines, coming out of a timeout, denied Northwestern a clean look in the final 11-second possession.
