One was the magic number for Michigan in the Wolverines’ Big Ten softball tournament opener Friday against Illinois.

One as in the Wolverines’ seed in the tournament, giving them the last at-bats at Andy Mohr Field in Bloomington, Indiana.

One, also, as in the run needed to defeat No. 9 seed Illinois, 1-0, provided in extra innings by freshman Lexie Blair on a walk-off home run.

Blair sent the second pitch she saw from Taylor Edwards to open the bottom of the eighth inning over the fence to send the Wolverines into the Big Ten semifinals, where they’ll face No.
