Longtime Wolverines bench boss, 77, wasn't forced out, in fact was offered long-term deal by school to stay
Legendary Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson officially announced his retirement during a news conference this afternoon.
“This isn’t a wake,” Berenson, 77, said of retiring after 33 seasons behind the bench and 848 wins.
Players from the past season attended the news conference, as well as former players such as Lee Moffie and Shawn Hunwick.
Berenson will be a part-time special assistant to U-M athletic director Warde Manuel and will give input into who the next hockey coach should be.
