Josh Ross was supposed to have a breakout season for Michigan football last fall.

After playing well as a part-time starter at weak-side linebacker in 2018, Ross was the heir to Devin Bush Jr. at middle linebacker following Bush's selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Assistant coaches and players praised Ross in the build-up to the 2019 season. While Bush had been a star in the middle of the defense, expectations were that Ross would be a suitable replacement, capable of making plays and leading the unit.
