Michigan football: Walk-on makes 1st catch, TD, but doesn't keep ball

Many people haven't heard of Jake McCurry. And even those who know the Michigan football sophomore walk-on receiver might not know him well enough.

In Saturday’s 49-3 win over Western Michigan, McCurry made his first career catch — an 18-yard touchdown. The announcer at Michigan Stadium credited it to Jacob McCurry. U-M’s official roster also lists Jacob as McCurry’s first name.

McCurry himself? He prefers to go by Jake.

“It’s fine,” McCurry said while smiling Tuesday night. “I don’t want everybody calling me Jacob, I like when only a few people do.”

Whatever you call him by, McCurry’s name was mentioned several times during the offseason as that of an ascending player.
