This time of year can be invaluable for a college football team.

Bowl practices are almost a preview of next season (especially for teams outside of the College Football Playoff). Coaches have a chance to evaluate younger players, and with the advent of the four-game redshirt rule, there's added incentive for freshmen (and other players who haven't played much) to earn playing time in the last game of the season without burning a year of eligibility.
