West Bloomfield running back Donovan Edwards sat on an aluminum bench, behind his teammates in Ford Field, and buried his face in his hands.
“I was thanking God for the opportunity,” he said after running for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries in West Bloomfield’s dominating 41-0 victory over Davison to win the Division 1 state championship.
Edwards got up slowly and walked across the field, as his teammates celebrated. He was stuck between worlds. He has already moved into a dorm at Michigan, where he has enrolled early and will play football.
