Mike Smith wanted to play big-time basketball.
The two sides were a fit, which is why Smith's commitment to the Wolverines on Friday afternoon makes sense.
"Michigan got them a G-E-M," said Lauren Foster, a Chicago area trainer who worked with Smith when he was younger.
The former Columbia point guard had to find a new home because of Ivy League rules that forbid grad transfers from athletic competition.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, were looking at entering the 2020-21 season with just two scholarship guards who could run the point, one of them a freshman.
