Michigan athletics seeks donors to help pay for trips, recruiting, more

ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan athletics department is seeking donors to help pay for things like nutrition, training, international travel and recruiting moving forward.

Michigan announced Wednesday the establishment of the Champions Fund, a new fundraising initiative it says "will allow Michigan to retain its standing as one of the top college athletic programs in the nation."

According to a published news release, the school currently pays $15 million annually to fund counseling, career and leadership development, nutrition, athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, international travel and recruiting for its 900 student-athletes.

"Our goal is to stay one step ahead of our competition and to remain one of the top college athletic programs in the country by investing directly into student-athlete welfare initiatives," athletic director Warde Manuel said in the release.
