Michigan beat Alabama — at least in terms of generating revenue.
USA TODAY published its annual database on the finances of NCAA Division I public-school athletic programs on Thursday. The database includes numbers from the 2016-17 fiscal year, and includes every year from 2004-05.
According to the data, in the 2016-17 fiscal year, Michigan’s athletic department had a total revenue of $185,173,187 and total expenses of $175,425,392.
That ranked U-M fourth in total revenue generated, behind Texas, Texas A&M and Ohio State. Rounding out the top 10 were Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida, LSU and Auburn.
