McCartney's ties run deep with Colorado, U-M

Bill McCartney was at a crossroads.

The Dearborn Divine Child football and basketball coach knew it was time to make a move. He had coached the Class B state title basketball and football teams in 1973, setting a new standard.

But if he were to leave for a higher level of competition, it had to be the right fit.

“He had offers to coach probably anywhere in the state in college football," Bill’s son Mike McCartney recalled this week. "He had offers in college basketball (including from U-M coach Johnny Orr), but when Bo (Schembechler) called him in 1974, it was a different call.
