The holding penalty call against Michigan running back Karan Higdon was so bad, the announcer called it "a penalty from Mars."
Many Michigan fans, along with head coach Jim Harbaugh and Higdon himself, agree. Higdon said he thought the penalty was on someone else. Coach Harbaugh said the penalty was a "phantom call."
The call came early in the 4th quarter with UM down by 4. QB Shea Patterson faked a handoff to Higdon and ran for 20 yards only to have it nullified. Michigan ended up shutting out Northwestern in the second half to come back and win 20-17.
