Loss of Mone has big impact on U-M D-line

The expected loss of nose guard Bryan Mone to a broken ankle means adjustments for Michigan’s defensive line.

He was its biggest body at nearly 330 pounds, but not just a space eater. Some who saw him in the spring said he could get great push into the backfield, which is especially important in the opener against Utah’s strong running game.

The effect will be inside and outside, though.

“It never happens that you have a great pass rush unless you have great push up the middle,” U-M defensive line coach Greg Mattison said on U-M media day before last week’s injury.
