John Beilein was scared. And that was before he knew the doctors were going to stop his heart.
What he did know was that two of his arteries were blocked. That surgeons planned to saw open his rib cage. That despite favorable percentages, sometimes these things go wrong.
And so, two nights before he was scheduled for open heart surgery, after he’d gone out to dinner with his family — a Last Supper, he called it; he had fish — he laid out the math in his head as he lay in his bed.
