Joe Roberson, the man who promoted Lloyd Carr to run Michigan's football program in 1995, died Monday, the school announced. He was 84.
Roberson served as athletic director in 1994-97 and spent 31 years working for the university. He promoted Carr in 1995, and two years later the Wolverines won a share of their most recent national championship in football.
Roberson also hired current athletic director Warde Manuel to a position in the athletic department.
