Jim Harbaugh, Michigan football confused by 'phantom' holding call

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh explains how his team turned the game around for 20-17 comeback win over Northwestern on Sept. 29 in Evanston, Ill. Nick Baumgardner, Freep

It was the holding call from Mars, as Fox Sports announcer Joel Klatt put it.

With the Michigan football team trailing, 17-13, near the start of the fourth quarter, quarterback Shea Patterson pulled the ball on a zone read and took off for 20 yards.

The officials, though, had thrown a flag on the play. The call? Holding, on senior running back Karan Higdon — who had been tackled by a Northwestern linebacker after Patterson decided to keep the ball and run.
