Saline High School was playing Adrian in southeast Michigan. The Hornets had a senior behind center who Glennie, Saline’s coach, figured would be in the profession himself before long.

The hit was cheap, late and out of bounds, shoving that quarterback into a bench. But he got up without any fuss, so Glennie didn’t think much of it until Nick Sheridan came over to him and said, almost matter-of-factly, “Coach, it’s broken.
