Former Ottawa Hills and Michigan basketball player Ernie Johnson dies

Ernie Johnson, a standout basketball player at Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills High School and member of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame, died Saturday.

He was 67.

Johnson played on back-to-back state title teams at Ottawa Hills in 1968-69 and, in 2002, the accomplishment was recognized as the team was enshrined in the GRSHOF.

After high school, Johnson played at the University of Michigan and was selected in the 14th round of the 1973 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Johnson played three seasons with the Wolverines (1971-73) and averaged 9.9 points and 7.
