It’s no secret that the Michigan hockey team struggled in net last season.
Despite having the nation’s top offense in the regular season and showcasing four defensemen with NHL ties, the Wolverines were 38th out of 59 teams nationally in goals-against, and can blame a shaky defense for falling just one game short of the postseason for the third-consecutive year.
In an attempt to remedy that problem next year, the program announced Thursday that former Michigan standout and 10-year NHL veteran goaltender Steve Shields will join the team as a volunteer assistant coach for next season.
“We're fortunate to have a coach with Steve Shields’ resume work with our goaltenders," said Michigan coach Red Berenson in a press release.
