When Brenda Tracy walks from the sideline to the middle of the Michigan Stadium field for the coin toss just before noon on Saturday, she will be aware of two statistics that have nothing to do with football.
First, that the majority of campus sexual assaults happen from the beginning of the school year to Thanksgiving. This period is known as the "red zone," fitting since it coincides with football season.
Second, a home football game on a Division I campus leads to a 41 percent increase in reports of rape among college-aged women.
"I'll go to the game Saturday as an honorary captain and I'll know that night someone's life is going to be changed forever," Tracy said.
